Sister’s Spiced Old Fashioned
We had our first-ever spiced old fashioned several years ago at our favorite bar in town, The Shady Lady Saloon. It was the ultimate taste of fall…our favorite time of year!. We immediately went home and tried to recreate it. We present to you our take on it. We promise, you will want to drink these all fall and winter!
Cheers!
Warm spices combine to make this drink an amazing fall and winter treat!
Spiced Simple Syrup
Stir cocktail with ice, strain and enjoy!
Sister’s Spiced Old Fashioned
For the Simple Syrup:
- 1 ½ cups water
- 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 2 star anise
- 10 whole cloves
- ¼ tsp freshly ground nutmeg
- ¼ tsp ground vanilla beans (or one whole vanilla bean split open)
Place the water and the sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until all the sugar is dissolved. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, cover and let steep for at least an hour. Strain and keep in the fridge.
Makes 2 cups of spice simple syrup or 16 cocktails.
To make the Old Fashioned:
- 2 oz. bourbon or rye whiskey
- 1 oz. spiced syrup
- 2 dashes of Angostura bitters
- Large ice cube
- Orange peel
Place a large ice cube in an old fashioned glass. Fill cocktail beaker 2/3 full of ice. Add whisky, syrup and bitters to the beaker and stir using a long-handled bar spoon until well chilled, about one minute. Stain into the old fashioned glass. Garnish with orange peel (squeeze the peel to extract some oil). Enjoy!
Makes one cocktail.
