Improved Grapefruit Sour Cocktail

Improved Grapefruit Sour Cocktail

It’s been a while since we posted a cocktail recipe…not that we haven’t been drinking them 😉  We love to experiment with new combinations of flavors and spirits. This time we created a riff on the Celebrity Crush Cocktail by using rye whiskey instead of vodka and we’re calling it our Improved Grapefruit Sour. If you’re not a fan of rye, feel free to stick with the vodka in the Celebrity Crush.

We grow Meyer lemons and Orablanco grapefruits, both of which have low acidity and are exceptionally sweet. Thus, we don’t add any sweetener to our cocktail. If you don’t have access to these sweeter citrus varieties, you may want to add some simple syrup to sweeten it up a bit. If you like your cocktails on the tart side, we suggest using more acidic citrus and leaving out the sweetener.

The Pamplemousse Rose Liqueur may not be available in a store near you but you can find it at several online retailers. It’s delicious and well worth seeking out. We use the Combier brand but there are other brands available.

Cheers!

  • 1 oz rye whiskey
  • 1 oz Pamplemousse Rose Liqueur
  • ¾ oz fresh Meyer lemon juice (or whatever lemons you have on hand)
  • ¾ oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • Lemon twist for garnish

Note: if you don’t have the sweeter varieties of citrus, we suggest adding ¼ – ½ ounce simple syrup.

Measure first 4 ingredients and place in a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice and shake vigorously for 45 to 60 seconds.

Strain cocktail into a coupe glass and garnish with the lemon twist.
